Crock Pot French Toast
Description
The Crock Pot French Toast recipe involves layering 1-inch cubes of stale or dried day-old bread in a slow cooker lined with a liner or foil sling. The bread is soaked in a mixture of eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and optional nutmeg. This slow cooking method on low heat for several hours allows the liquid to set into a creamy custard binding the bread pieces together.
The texture is moist and tender with a soft set interior, contrasting with some slightly firm edges depending on the bread used. The gentle steam cooking avoids browning but delivers a comforting, soft French toast casserole flavor profile. Using stale bread ensures sturdiness during soaking so the pieces absorb eggs without becoming mushy.
This dish is suited for a make-ahead breakfast or brunch and can be topped with syrup, powdered sugar, or fruit. Variations in milk can accommodate dairy or nondairy preferences. A slow cooker liner or foil sling helps with easy removal and cleanup.
To prepare, ensure the bread is properly dried by toasting in the oven if not stale. Press the bread gently into the custard to saturate fully. Let the French toast rest after cooking for the custard to finish setting before slicing and serving.

- 3 ½ cups milk
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

- Uncover, and let rest 10 minutes before serving.
- Serve topped with syrup, powdered sugar, or your favorite French toast toppings.
Notes
- Use stale or dried bread to absorb the custard properly; dry bread in the oven at 225°F for 30 minutes if needed.
- Milk options range from skim to cream, including nondairy alternatives.
- A slow cooker liner or foil sling eases removal and cleanup.
- Allow the dish to rest after cooking for a firmer set before serving.
