Crock Pot Pineapple Ham
Description
This recipe uses a 7-8 pound spiral ham placed over brown sugar in a crock pot, topped with pineapple tidbits and more brown sugar. The cooking process on low heat for 2 to 3 hours, or shorter on high, melts the sugars and softens the ham while allowing the pineapple to seep into the meat for added flavor. Using a spiral ham helps juices penetrate deeper, but scoring a bone-in ham provides a similar effect.
The final ham is flavorful with a balance of sweet and savory notes from the pineapple and brown sugar glaze. The slow cooker method gently heats the ham, preserving moisture and creating tender slices ideal for holiday meals or special dinners.
Leftover ham can be refrigerated in airtight containers for 3 to 4 days and reheated gently in the oven covered with foil to retain moisture. For a browned finish, broiling after slow cooking is recommended. Portion recommendations suggest about 3/4 to 1 pound of bone-in ham per person, adjusting for children and preferences.
Substitutions are possible, such as using fresh pineapple in place of canned. A larger crock pot (6-8 quart) is necessary to accommodate the size of the ham comfortably without crowding.
Ingredients
- 2 c. brown sugar divided
- 7-8 lb spiral ham bone in
- 20 oz pineapple tidbits canned
Instructions
- Sprinkle 1 c. of the brown sugar in the bottom of your crock pot.
- Place ham on top of brown sugar. Pour pineapple tidbits over the top of ham. Sprinkle with remaining brown sugar.
- Cook on low 2-3 hours or high 1-2 hours.
Notes
- Use a spiral ham or score a bone-in ham to allow pineapple juices to penetrate and enhance flavor.
- Choose a 6 to 8 quart crock pot to ensure the ham fits without crowding; smaller slow cookers may require smaller hams.
- Substituting fresh pineapple tidbits for canned is possible, which may provide a different freshness in flavor.
- To brown the ham after cooking, place it under a broiler for 5 to 10 minutes for a caramelized crust.
- Plan for about 3/4 to 1 pound of bone-in ham per adult serving, adjusting down for children.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days; reheat covered at 350°F for approximately 20 minutes.
