Crockpot Apple Butter

This Crockpot Apple Butter recipe slow-cooks a large quantity of apples with sugar and warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, and allspice until thick and smooth. The apples break down and reduce into a rich, spiced spread with deep apple flavor. The water bath canning method preserves this naturally high-acid fruit spread, making it suitable for pantry storage. It’s a versatile condiment for toast, baking, or cooking.

Description

Crockpot Apple Butter uses peeled, cored, and quartered apples cooked in a slow cooker with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and water. Cooking on low or high heat for several hours allows the fruit to soften and flavors to meld. An uncovered final cooking phase reduces excess moisture and concentrates the spread. A handheld blender purees the mixture to a smooth consistency, developing a thick, velvety texture with warm spice notes balanced by sugars and natural apple tartness.

This apple butter can be used as a topping or ingredient in various recipes. Homemade storage lasts several weeks refrigerated or months frozen. For long-term storage, proper water bath canning is recommended due to apple’s natural acidity, involving sterilized jars, filling hot apple butter with headspace, and processing for safe preservation.

The notes emphasize sterilization methods, fill-level accuracy, air bubbles removal, and seal testing to ensure safety and longevity. Properly canned apple butter can last up to a year stored in a cool, dark place, offering a rewarding way to preserve abundant apple harvests.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 5 lbs. apple or up to 7 lbs. -- however many you need to fill up your slow cooker, any variety
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and quarter the apples.
  2. Spray the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray and place the apples inside. I use as many apples as it takes to fill up my slow cooker! Add the remaining ingredients to slow cooker and stir to combine.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for 4-6 hours. Uncover, give it a good stir, and continue cooking uncovered for an additional 2 hours on LOW or 1 hour on HIGH. This will allow the apple butter to cook down and thicken.
  4. Use a hand blender to puree until smooth. If you don’t have a hand blender, transfer to a regular blender and puree in batches.
  5. Store in mason jars in the refrigerator for a few weeks, or keep in the freezer. If you want to store the apple butter in a pantry, be sure to follow proper canning procedures (sterilizing and processing jars). See the canning instructions in the notes below.

Notes

  • Store apple butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 7-10 days or freeze for up to 3 months to maintain quality.
  • Water bath canning extends shelf life up to 1 year; ensure jars and lids are sterilized and filled hot with ½-inch headspace.
  • Remove air bubbles before sealing jars and process in a water bath canner for 10 minutes to prevent spoilage.
  • Check jar seals after cooling; refrigerate unsealed jars and use within 3 weeks.
