Crockpot Brown Sugar Cola Glazed Ham
Description
The Crockpot Brown Sugar Cola Glazed Ham begins with placing the pre-cooked bone-in ham in a slow cooker. A glaze made from brown sugar, Coca-Cola, and Dijon mustard is heated to dissolve the sugar and then poured over the ham, ensuring it reaches between any pre-sliced sections to impart flavor. The ham cooks on low heat for several hours, during which it is basted periodically with the cooking liquid to maintain moisture and enhance the glaze’s penetration.
The cooking process yields a ham with a sticky, caramelized exterior balanced by the subtle acidity and sweetness from the cola and brown sugar. Dijon mustard plays a key role by emulsifying the glaze, preventing separation and enriching the taste.
Once slow-cooked, the ham can be sliced and served directly or broiled briefly with extra glaze brushed on, creating a deeper caramelized finish. This approach suits holiday meals or special occasions requiring a tender, flavorful centerpiece.
Practical tips include choosing a ham size appropriate for the crockpot to avoid trimming, and storing leftovers in airtight containers in the fridge or freezer. Reheating can be done safely using the microwave, crockpot, or stove with reserved glaze to retain moisture.
Ingredients
- 5-8 pound ham bone in, cooked
- 1 can Coca-Cola
- ½ cup brown sugar packed
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Instructions
- Place the ham in the basin of a slow cooker.
- In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar, cola, and mustard over high heat. Bring to a boil and make sure the sugar has dissolved. Pour the mixture over the ham. If your ham is pre-sliced make sure some of the glaze goes in between the slices.
- Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4-6 hours, basting with the cooking juices every few hours.
- Remove ham from slow cooker and let cool a bit until it can be handled. Slice the ham and serve.
- If not serving immediately, preheat the broiler and transfer the ham to a oven-safe baking dish. Brush with some of the leftover liquid and broil for about 5 minutes, glazing with additional liquid as preferred.
Notes
- Dijon mustard is essential in the glaze to emulsify the mixture and add flavor, so do not omit it.
- Baste the ham every couple of hours during cooking to keep it juicy and well-glazed.
- Choose a ham size that fits your crockpot to avoid cutting off pieces.
- Store cooked ham in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or freeze for 3-4 months.
- Reheat leftovers in the microwave, crockpot, or on the stove with reserved glaze to maintain moisture and flavor.
