Crockpot Ham Recipe
Description
This recipe uses an 8-pound bone-in, spiral-cut cured ham cooked in a slow cooker with a glaze made from brown sugar, pineapple juice, and pure maple syrup. The ham is placed cut side down to allow even cooking and coated with an initial portion of brown sugar before adding the sweet liquids. Cooking on low heat for several hours ensures the ham is heated through and infused with glaze flavors.
After slow cooking, excess juices are removed and combined with more brown sugar in a separate pot to boil and thicken into a rich glaze, which is then poured back over the ham. This glazing step builds a sticky, sweet exterior enhancing the ham’s taste and texture. The slow cooker setting on warm lets the ham absorb glaze flavors further before serving.
This ham serves as a centerpiece for gatherings or meals, best sliced and garnished with fresh herbs. It pairs well with vegetables or side dishes that complement sweet notes. Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator up to five days and can be frozen tightly wrapped for up to three months, maintaining quality for future meals.
Ingredients
- 8 pounds ham bone-in, spiral-cut, cured
- 2-2½ cups brown sugar divided, packed, light
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- ¼ cup pure maple syrup (not artificially flavored pancake syrup)
Instructions
- Spray your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Place ham cut side down in the greased slow cooker.
- Rub 1 cup brown sugar all over the ham, then pour pineapple juice and syrup over the top.
- Cook on low for 3–4 hours.
- Remove excess liquid from the slow cooker and transfer to a pot. Add remaining 1-1½ cups brown sugar to pot, using more sugar if you prefer a sweeter ham. Bring to a rolling boil, then remove from the heat and pour over the ham. Cook on warm for an additional 30–60 minutes.
- Remove ham to a platter and spoon extra juices over ham slices. Garnish with fresh herbs before serving.
Notes
- Different types of ham can be used; fresh ham requires full cooking before slow cooker steps.
- Use cured or cooked smoked ham for best results without additional cooking.
- Store leftovers airtight in the fridge for up to five days.
- Freeze wrapped ham for up to three months, thawing properly before reheating.
