Crockpot Salisbury Steak

Report
This Crockpot Salisbury Steak recipe combines ground beef patties with a mushroom and onion gravy cooked slowly for tender results. The dish features beef patties browned briefly then simmered in a gravy of brown gravy mix, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. The resulting texture is moist and flavorful, with the mushrooms and onions cooked soft in the sauce. It provides a comforting meal, served over mashed potatoes, making it practical for a home-cooked dinner requiring mostly hands-off cooking time in a crockpot.

Description

Crockpot Salisbury Steak uses lean ground beef formed into patties mixed with breadcrumbs, egg, and seasonings. After browning the patties briefly to seal in juices, they cook slowly on top of sliced onions and mushrooms inside a crockpot. The sauce is made by mixing brown gravy mix, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard, poured over the patties to infuse flavor during slow cooking. After cooking, a cornstarch slurry thickens the sauce in the crockpot before the patties are returned to coat in the rich mushroom-onion gravy.

The slow cooking method yields patties that stay tender and moist, pairing well with mashed potatoes to soak up the savory gravy. The Worcestershire and Dijon add subtle tang and umami depth to the sauce. The sliced mushrooms and onions provide a softened texture contrast and additional savory notes throughout the dish.

This dish is ideal as a hearty, comforting entrée requiring minimal active preparation. The patties’ texture remains soft yet cohesive without falling apart, while the thickened gravy keeps the dish moist. It's well-suited for a family meal or batch cooking since leftovers keep well refrigerated for several days.

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to five days to maintain freshness. Ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F when cooking for safety.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Patties:

  • 1 1/2 pound ground beef lean
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg beaten, large
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Gravy:

  • 1/2 onion (sliced)
  • 4 ounces mushrooms (sliced)
  • 1 packet brown gravy mix
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water cold

Instructions

  1. Mix together the patties ingredients in a mixing bowl.  Then divide the mixture into 6 even patties. Brown the patties in a large skillet over medium high heat for approximately 3 minutes per side. Do not cook the patties all the way through.
  2. Place the mushrooms and onions in the bottom of a 6 quart crock pot.  Then place the patties on top.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce and dijon mustard.  Pour this mixture into the crock pot over the beef.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 3 hours until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
  5. Remove the patties from the crock pot and set aside.
  6. Whisk together the cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl.  Stir this mixture into the crock pot.  Cover and cook on high for 15-20 minutes until the sauce thickens.  Then add the beef patties back to the crock pot.
  7. Serve over mashed potatoes and enjoy!
