Croque Monsieur Sliders
Description
The Croque Monsieur Sliders start with halved Hawaiian rolls layered with sliced ham and shredded Gruyere cheese, with mustard spread on the roll tops. A cheese sauce made by preparing a butter-flour roux and gradually whisking in milk, Parmesan, Dijon mustard, thyme, and seasonings is poured over the assembled sliders. Baking melts the cheese and heats the ham, creating a warm, creamy topping over the soft, slightly sweet rolls.
The result is a small sandwich combining the smoky saltiness of ham with the nutty Gruyere and tangy Dijon in a rich sauce. Baking helps meld the flavors while softening the rolls, making these a comforting finger food for gatherings or casual meals.
The sliders can be made ahead and refrigerated in the baking dish before cooking, allowing the flavors to meld. Reheating in a pan with butter and pressing them slightly recreates a grilled texture. Variations in the roll type, cheeses, or mustard can adjust the flavor profile slightly, but the Hawaiian rolls are preferred for their sweetness.
Ingredients
Sliders
- 12 hawaiian rolls
- 1 lb ham sliced
- 3 cups gruyere cheese 12 oz, shredded
- 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
Cheese Sauce
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons flour 34 g
- 2 cups milk 2%
- 1/3 cup Parmesan Cheese shredded
- 2 teaspoons thyme fresh
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper ground
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Instructions
- Slice Rolls: Slice rolls in half and separate the bottom half from the top, lining the bottom in a large baking dish.
- Layer the Sliders: Add 1/2 of the Gruyere cheese to the bread, then add a layer of sliced ham, and finish with the rest of the cheese. Add Dijon to the inside of the tops of the rolls and then place them back on top ham and cheese layered rolls.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Create Sauce: In a small saucepan add the butter and turn the heat to medium. Add the flour and whisk in the flour as the butter melts to create a roux. Once a thick slightly browned roux has formed, slowly add the milk, just a little bit at a time, whisking as you add and as it all is brought to a gentle boil.Once all of the milk is incorporated, add the dijon, salt, pepper, thyme, and Parmesan cheese. Whisk to combine turn heat down to low and let simmer for another 3-4 minutes.
- Add Sauce and Bake: Gently pour the sauce over the top of the rolls. Bake for 15 minutes.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- Store prepared sliders in the refrigerator for up to two days, noting that storage time may vary depending on the ham used.
- Reheat sliders in a pan with butter, pressing them slightly for a grilled effect, optionally adding fresh cheese sauce on top.
- Hawaiian rolls contribute a subtle sweetness; substitute with regular dinner rolls if desired but expect a different taste profile.
- For cheeses, Swiss can replace Gruyere and Romano or Asiago can substitute Parmesan; shredding your own cheese improves melting quality.
- Use 2% milk in the sauce, or swap for whole milk or half-and-half for a richer texture.
- Mustard type can be varied to personal preference.
- The sliders can be assembled a day ahead, stored covered in the refrigerator, then brought to room temperature before baking with the sauce added.
