Crunchy Baked Sweet Potato Chips

This recipe produces crunchy baked sweet potato chips by thinly slicing whole sweet potatoes and baking them at a low temperature with olive oil and sea salt. The process includes soaking the slices in water to remove excess starch, ensuring a crisp texture. The chips bake evenly on a single layer with a flip halfway through, resulting in lightly crisped edges and a tender center.

Description

Sweet potatoes are sliced very thinly, preferably with a mandoline for uniform thickness, and soaked briefly in cold water to reduce surface starch. After drying, the slices are tossed with olive oil and spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. The chips bake slowly at 300°F, flipped mid-way to crisp both sides.

The result is a snack with a balance of crispness and slight chewiness, carrying the natural sweetness of the potato enhanced by the salt and mild olive oil flavor. Baking instead of frying keeps the chips lighter while maintaining crunch.

Cool the chips on the baking sheet to allow them to firm up as they cool. This snack works well as a healthier alternative to fried chips with natural ingredients and simple seasoning.

  3. Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit
  4. Remove potatoes from water, drain and dry off with paper towels
  5. Place the potatoes into a bowl and add the olive oil
  6. Mix thoroughly with your hands until every slice is completely coated with the oil
  7. Place slices in one single layer on a sheet pan (do not line with parchment paper)
  8. Sprinkle with sea salt
  9. Bake for 10 minutes
  10. Remove from the oven and flip them over
  11. Rotate the pans and bake for 10 more minutes
  12. Remove from heat and let the chips cool in the sheet pan (they will continue to crisp up while they're cooling)
