Cube Steak and Gravy
Description
Cube Steak and Gravy begins by seasoning cube steaks with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then lightly dusting them with flour. The steaks are browned in butter over medium-high heat to develop a savory crust. After removing the steaks, additional butter is melted in the skillet to create the gravy base.
Flour is whisked into the melted butter and cooked briefly to form a roux, then beef broth and Worcestershire sauce are added and whisked until smooth. Sliced yellow onions are stirred in and cooked until tender, thickening the sauce. The browned steaks return to the skillet, coated in gravy, then simmer covered over low heat until fully cooked and tender.
This preparation yields tender steak with a deeply flavored, creamy gravy enriched by caramelized onions. Serving it warm over mashed potatoes or a similar starch completes a comforting, hearty meal. Leftover gravy-coated steak can be refrigerated for up to five days.
Ingredients
- 4 cube steak
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 6 Tablespoons butter divided
- 1/2 yellow onion sliced
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour divided
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Season the cube steaks with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Then lightly sprinkle 1 tablespoon of flour on both sides of the steaks.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of butter to a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the steaks to the skillet.
- Cook the cube steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side until they are browned slightly. Remove the steaks from the skillet to a separate plate.
- Add the remaining butter to the skillet. Heat until it’s melted.
- Whisk in the remaining flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Whisk in the broth and Worcestershire sauce until creamy. Then stir in the onions. Cook for 5-6 minutes until onions are tender and sauce is thickened.
- Add the steaks back to the skillet. Cover the steaks with the gravy.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 5-7 minutes until the steak are cooked through.
- Remove from heat. Serve warm over mashed potatoes and enjoy!
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days for best quality.
