Czech Deli-style Salad with Mayo – Pochoutkový salát

Retro recipe for mayo salad, which was popular in the eighties in communist Czechoslovakia. An authentic recipe to enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces thinly sliced salami Mortadella or ham
  • ¾ cup frozen peas thawed
  • 1 small onion
  • 4 ounces Pickles
  • 1 cup mayonnaise plain
  • salt
  • teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cut 6 ounces thinly sliced salami and 4 ounces pickles into stripes. Peel 1 small onion and chop it finely.
  2. Add ¾ cup frozen peas (thawed) and 1 cup mayonnaise. Season with salt and ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper.
  3. Mix until combined. Let the salad rest. Taste and add some more salt or pepper if needed.
  4. Serve with white bread or use as a base for open-faced sandwiches.

Notes

  • The basic recipe makes about 4 portions.
  • You can make a lighter variant of this salad by mixing the mayo with white yogurt in a 1:1 ratio.
