Czech Kolaches Recipe

Czech Kolaches are soft, yeast-leavened sweet buns with an indentation filled with cheese or fruit jam and topped with a crumbly streusel. The dough is enriched with butter, milk, and egg yolks, yielding a tender and slightly sweet bread. The fillings add a creamy or fruity contrast against the tender bread and crunchy topping.

Description

The Czech Kolaches Recipe begins with a flour-based dough enriched with powdered sugar, instant yeast, salt, melted butter, lukewarm milk, and egg yolks. After mixing and kneading, the dough rises until doubled. It is then divided into 12 balls placed apart on a baking sheet. Each ball is pressed down to create an indentation before a second rise until doubled again.

Fillings include a cheese blend with cottage cheese, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and egg yolk, or a fruit jam thinned with water. A simple streusel topping made from flour, sugar, melted butter, and salt adds a crunchy, sweet texture on top. These components bake into soft, fluffy buns with a creamy or fruity center and a crumbly top.

Kolaches are traditionally enjoyed as breakfast pastries or dessert and can be paired with coffee or tea. The dough’s softness and slightly sweet nature harmonize with the tangy or sweet fillings, producing a satisfying treat with varied textures.

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Let them rest in a pan for 5 minutes, then transfer on to a cooling rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
