Dad's Famous BBQ Baked Beans

Dad's Famous BBQ Baked Beans are a savory and sweet side dish combining pork and beans with bacon, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, onions, and spices baked slowly to develop rich flavor. The slow oven cooking melds these components into a thick, flavorful bean dish with smoky, sweet, and tangy notes complemented by the warmth of ground mustard and black pepper.

Description

This recipe mixes canned pork and beans with diced or whole bacon, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, diced onions, ground mustard, black pepper, and kosher salt. After combining, the beans are baked at 350°F for 90 minutes in an oven-safe dish, allowing the flavors to deepen and the texture to thicken.

The bacon adds smokiness that seeps into the beans while brown sugar and BBQ sauce provide sweetness and tang. The ground mustard and black pepper bring subtle heat and complexity. Baking the mixture slowly ensures a tender texture and well-blended taste.

Serve this baked beans dish as a classic barbecue side, ideal with grilled meats, burgers, or sandwiches. It adds a hearty, flavorful element to cookouts and family dinners.

For variations, the bacon can be left whole and removed before serving or diced into the beans. This dish can also be prepared in a slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours or smoked at 225°F for 2-3 hours for alternative cooking methods.

  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • ½ cup onion diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

Notes

  • Leaving the bacon slice whole during baking allows removal before serving for less chew.
  • Dicing bacon before adding results in beans with cooked-in bacon bits for more texture.
  • Slow cooker method: cook all ingredients on low for 4-6 hours instead of oven baking.
  • Smoking option: cook in a smoker-safe dish at 225°F for 2-3 hours to infuse smoke flavor.
