Date Nut Bread
Description
This Date Nut Bread recipe starts by soaking chopped dates with baking soda and butter in boiling water until cool, which softens the dates and activates the soda. Vanilla, sugar, flour, and egg are then mixed in, followed by folding in chopped walnuts for crunch.
The batter is poured into greased pans and baked. Depending on the shape—loaf, bundt, or muffins—baking times range from 15 to 60 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The bread has a dense but moist texture with sweet pockets of dates and a subtle nutty flavor from walnuts.
This bread makes a good breakfast or snack item and pairs well with butter or cream cheese. Its preparation requires soaking dates first for moisture and even distribution, and baking times should be adjusted by pan size and oven accuracy for best results.
