Date Nut Oatmeal
Description
Date Nut Oatmeal is prepared by boiling water with optional salt before stirring in rolled oats, chopped pecans, and dates. The mixture is cooked covered on medium heat for about five minutes, stirred occasionally to prevent sticking, then allowed to stand briefly off the heat to thicken. The pecans maintain a crunchy contrast against the soft oats, while the chopped dates release sweetness throughout. This blend offers both texture and flavor variety in a simple oat-based dish.
The oatmeal's mildly sweet and nutty character comes from the pecans and dates, balanced by the oats' natural creaminess once cooked. Addition of brown sugar and milk at serving adds further depth and smoothness, allowing adjustments to sweetness and richness according to preference.
This oatmeal works well as a warm, filling breakfast, suitable for cooler mornings or when a comforting cereal is desired. Its preparation method is straightforward and allows for batch cooking and refrigeration or freezing for later use without large quality loss.
Leftover oatmeal should be cooled completely, stored in an airtight container, and refrigerated up to three days or frozen for one to two months. When reheating, adding milk or water helps restore a creamy consistency, and gentle warming with stirring ensures even heat distribution.
Ingredients
- 3 ½ cups water
- ½ teaspoon salt optional
- 2 cups rolled oats
- ⅔ cup pecans chopped
- ⅔ cup dates chopped
Instructions
- Bring the water and salt to a boil.
- Stir in the oats, pecans and dates.
- Reduce heat to medium.
- Cover and cook for 5 minutes, stirring once or twice.
- Remove from heat and let stand for 2-3 minutes before serving.
- Serve with a sprinkle of brown sugar or turbinado sugar and a splash of milk or half and half.
- Sprinkle over additional dates and pecans if desired.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days or freeze for one to two months to extend shelf life.
- When freezing, portion the oatmeal into freezer bags, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.
- Thaw frozen oatmeal in the refrigerator overnight before reheating gently with added milk or water to loosen the consistency.
- Reheat on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally, or in the microwave in short bursts with stirring between.
