Deep Fried Cauliflower
Description
The batter consists of flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, water, and hot sauce combined until smooth to provide flavor and lightness. Cauliflower florets are dipped in this batter, then coated in Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs for extra texture and seasoning. Frying in oil heated to 365°F crisps the coating quickly, sealing in moisture without greasiness.
After frying, the pieces are drained on paper towels to remove excess oil and may be salted lightly. This preparation yields a golden, crunchy exterior surrounding tender cauliflower, a combination effective as a finger food or side dish.
If a deep fryer is unavailable, frying in a deep skillet or heavy pot with monitored oil temperature is a suitable alternative. Adjusting seasonings in the batter or breadcrumbs—such as incorporating garlic powder, smoked paprika, or Parmesan—can customize the flavor profile further.
Ingredients
- 1 head cauliflower cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce such as Frank's
- 2 cups breadcrumbs Italian seasoned
- neutral cooking oil for frying, generic cooking oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. Stir in water and hot sauce until the batter is smooth.
- Take each cauliflower piece and give it a good dunk in the batter, making sure it's evenly coated. Let the excess batter drip off. Roll the battered cauliflower in the breadcrumbs until they're completely covered.
- Heat your deep fryer to 365°F (185℃). Fry the cauliflower pieces in batches until they're golden and crispy.
- Drain them on paper towels to get rid of any extra oil. Sprinkle a little salt over them if you like – it's optional.
Notes
- You can deep fry cauliflower in a large skillet or heavy pot if you don’t have a deep fryer; use a thermometer to keep oil at 365°F (185°C).
- Maintaining correct oil temperature is important: too low and it becomes greasy, too high and it burns before cooking through.
- Season the batter or breadcrumbs with additional spices like garlic powder, smoked paprika, or grated Parmesan for extra flavor.
