Dehydrated Apples in Air Fryer
Description
This recipe uses ripe red apples that are peeled or left unpeeled, cored optionally, and sliced thinly to about 1/8 inch. Cinnamon powder is tossed with the slices to add warm spice. The slices are air fried at 300°F (150°C), stirred every five minutes to ensure even drying, for roughly 14–16 minutes, producing a light crispness once cooled. The air fryer accelerates dehydration, preventing sogginess by avoiding overcrowding and working best in batches.
The slices become crunchy while maintaining the apple’s flavor with a gentle cinnamon note. The resulting dried apples make a convenient snack or topping for cereals and salads, without added sugars.
The apples can also be dehydrated in an oven at low heat over an extended period. Once cool, they store up to one week airtight at room temperature or refrigerated. Additional spices like nutmeg, clove, or pumpkin pie spice can be added for variation.
By slicing evenly and avoiding overcrowding, the drying process is consistent ensuring crisp pieces rather than chewy or soggy ones.
Ingredients
- 2 large apple red variety
- pinch cinnamon powder
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 300 F (150C).
- Thinly slice the apples, without peeling. Core them if desired. You can either slice with a mandolin or a very sharp knife to 1/8 inch thickness. Place all the apple slices in a bowl, then sprinkle with cinnamon and toss to coat thoroughly.
- Add the apple slices to the air fryer without overcrowding. You may have to air fry in batches (I did two batches).
- Air fry for 14-16 minutes, tossing the slices around every 5 minutes or so.
- Once cooking time is over, remove onto a platter and let them cool at which point they'll crisp up further.
- Enjoy right away or store tightly covered at cool room temperature or in the fridge for up to one week.
Notes
- Choose red apple varieties for natural sweetness without needing extra sugar.
- Slice apples as thinly and evenly as possible, about 1/8 inch, for uniform crispness.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches to allow hot air circulation and prevent sogginess.
- You can dehydrate apples in the oven at 215°F (100°C) for around 3 hours as an alternative method.
- Store cooled, dried apple slices in an airtight container for up to one week at room temperature or refrigerated.
- Feel free to experiment with other warm spices like nutmeg, clove, or pumpkin pie spice for variety.
