Delicious Candied Yams Recipe
Description
This recipe transforms thickly sliced yams or sweet potatoes into a sweet baked dish by coating them with a sauce made from melted butter, packed light brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. The coated slices are baked covered to soften, then uncovered and stirred before a second baking period to deepen the caramelization and tenderness. This two-stage baking softens the yams through while allowing the sugar and spices to penetrate and form a glossy, flavorful coating.
The flavor is warm and aromatic with brown sugar’s subtle caramel notes complemented by vanilla and spices. The texture ends tender enough to break easily but not mushy, making it a classic sweet side often served at holiday meals.
The recipe allows substitution of any color sweet potato or yam. Additional spices like ground ginger or cloves can be added for variation. Reheating tips include warming gently in the oven covered and stirring halfway through. The dish stores in the refrigerator for up to five days but doesn’t freeze well, so fresh preparation or refrigeration is recommended.
