Deviled Crab

Deviled Crab blends lump crab meat with sautéed vegetables, spices, and a creamy mixture of mayonnaise, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Topped with buttery panko breadcrumbs and baked until golden, this dish features a rich, tender interior with a crisp topping and is ideal as a main or appetizer serving for seafood fans.

Description

The Deviled Crab recipe combines crab meat with a sautéed mix of onion, celery, bell pepper, and garlic, cooked until softened but not browned. This mixture is cooled, then folded into a sauce made from mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot sauce or cayenne, and seasoning, along with beaten egg, parsley, and breadcrumbs. The gentle folding helps keep the crab lumps intact.

Portioned into buttered baking dishes, the crab mixture is topped with panko breadcrumbs blended with melted butter to add a crunchy, golden crust upon baking at 375 degrees. The dish is baked until warmed through and visually appealing from a crisp top layer.

The result is a seafood dish with delicate crab flavor, balanced spices, and a creamy yet textured consistency, suitable for serving as a generous main course for two or an appetizer for four to six in smaller portions.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 Tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup onion diced
  • 1 tick celery diced
  • 1/4 cup bell pepper diced (any color)
  • 1 garlic minced, clove
  • 2 Tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce or ¼ teaspoon cayenne powder
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 Tablespoon parsley or 1 teaspoon dried parsley, chopped
  • 8 ounces crab meat lump style
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs lightly toasted, fresh
  • 1 Tablespoons butter melted
  • 1/4 cup panko or Italian breadcrumbs, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Melt 2 Tablespoons butter and sautee the onion, celery, bell pepper and garlic and cook until softened but not brown. Remove from the heat and let cool. Move to refrigerator (or even freezer if you watch carefully) for faster cooling.
  3. Whisk together mayonnaise, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot sauce or cayenne, salt and pepper in a bowl. Adjust the seasonings as desired. Add the egg, crab, parsley, breadcrumbs and cooled onion mixture. Fold together gently to keep crab lumps intact.
  4. Spray baking dishes with non-stick spray or spread with butter. Divide the crab mixture into prepared baking dishes (or larger casserole). Prepare the topping by mixing the melted butter into the panko breadcrumbs. Sprinkle over the crab mixture.
  5. Set into a rimmed baking sheet and bake until warmed through and golden, 15 to 18 minutes.

Notes

  • This recipe makes enough for two generous main course servings or 4 to 6 appetizer portions when served in smaller dishes.
