DIY Copycat Homemade Hidden Valley Ranch Mix
Description
DIY Copycat Homemade Hidden Valley Ranch Mix combines dry buttermilk powder, herbs like parsley and dill, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, a touch of sugar, garlic salt, black pepper, and dried portabella mushrooms ground into powder. The mushrooms add an umami touch that mimics the commercial ranch flavor.
The dry ingredients are mixed in a blender to achieve a fine powder before stirring in some whole dried herbs for texture. This powder replicates the seasoning found in packaged ranch dips and dressings, suited for mixing with sour cream, mayonaisse, or buttermilk to create dips or dressings.
This powder can also be sprinkled on breads with butter for a ranch-flavored garlic bread or used to season roasted potatoes and other dishes requiring a ranch seasoning. It stores well in an airtight container for several months in the pantry or longer in the freezer.
Instructions include making dips by chilling sour cream mixed with the powder or dressings using a blend of mayonnaise and buttermilk stirred with the mix. Real buttermilk is important for authentic flavor in dressings.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup dry buttermilk powder
- 1 tbsp parsley dried, for blending, divided
- 1 tsp dill weed dried, divided
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp dried onion flakes or dried chopped onion
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp portabella mushrooms organic, dried, pieces
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper ground
- 1/2 tsp sugar
Instructions
- Add all the dry ingredients except the reserved 1 tsp of dried parsley and the 1/2 teaspoon of dried dill to your blender. Blend until a nice powder.
- Hand mix in the reserved parsley and dill - you want to see some herbs in your mix.
- Store dry mix in an air-tight container or jar in your pantry for 2-3 months or in the freezer for 6 months or longer.
Notes
- Mix 2 tablespoons of dry powder with 1/2 to 1 cup sour cream to make dip; chill 2 hours before serving.
- For dressing, blend 3 tablespoons dry mix with 1 cup mayonnaise and 2/3 cup buttermilk; refrigerate 1-2 hours.
- Use real buttermilk for dressings; regular milk does not produce authentic flavor.
- Sprinkle dry mix over buttered bread and bake for ranch-style garlic bread.
- Store dry mix in airtight container for 2-3 months in pantry or up to 6 months in freezer.
