Dog Cookie Recipe

These Dog Cookies are made from whole wheat flour, oats, and peanut butter safe for dogs, baked into firm, hand-shaped treats. Hot water helps bind the dough, which is formed into small balls and textured with a fork to flatten before baking. The cookies harden to a texture suitable for dog chewing, making a wholesome, homemade snack for pets.

Description

The recipe combines whole wheat flour and oats as the base, enriched with peanut butter (free of xylitol) and a whole egg for binding. Hot water is incorporated to bring the dough together, which becomes thick and may require hand kneading. Each dough ball is flattened with a crosshatch pattern to help baking evenness and create a distinctive look. The cookies bake at 350°F for 15 minutes then cool on a rack to set their firmness.

The resulting dog cookies are firm and dry, which helps with preservation, and provide a simple treat made from recognizable ingredients. They are free of added sugars or artificial additives, making them suitable for most dogs with appropriate portion control. These cookies can also serve as a training reward or snack.

Proper storage in an airtight container or the refrigerator preserves freshness, and freezing extends shelf life further.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 3/4 cup peanut butter make sure it does not contain xylitol (also called birch sugar, natural
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/4 cups water hot

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 Degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and stir to mix. The dough is thick, and you may find that you need to use your hands to actually knead the dough together.
  3. Roll into balls approximately 1" in diameter and place onto a baking sheet. Using the tines of a fork, gently press a crosshatch shape into each cookie. This will both give a physical imprint of lines and help flatten the cookie dough.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove from oven and place baking sheet on a wire cooling rack. After ten minutes, remove from baking sheet. Store tightly covered.

Notes

  • Store completely cooled cookies in an airtight container or freezer bag.
  • Cookies keep for 7-10 days refrigerated, up to 2 months frozen, or 3-4 days at room temperature.
