Drunken Cherries

Drunken Cherries combine fresh cherries, sugar, and vodka soaked together to create a boozy, sweet preserved fruit. The cherries absorb the vodka and dissolve the sugar, producing a flavorful infusion that can be enjoyed after a minimum of two weeks. The texture softens but the cherries retain a pleasant bite. This preparation is ideal for adding a spirited touch to desserts, cocktails, or as a garnish.

Description

The Drunken Cherries recipe uses whole fresh cherries packed tightly in a jar with sugar and vodka. The sugar begins dissolving as the vodka preserves the fruit, which is allowed to steep in a cool, dark place. Over two weeks or longer, the cherries take on a boozy sweetness with a tender texture. The method involves trimming cherry stems short, layering ingredients carefully, and shaking to dissolve the sugar early in the process. This slow maceration extracts flavor into both the fruit and the liquid.

The resulting preparation yields cherries flavored primarily by vodka's sharpness balanced with sweetness. The texture stays slightly firm despite soaking. The infused vodka can be used separately in drinks or desserts, while the cherries make a distinctive garnish or ingredient in various dishes that benefit from a touch of alcohol and fruitiness.

This recipe requires patience given the soaking time but needs only basic equipment like glass jars and a funnel. No cooking is involved, making it accessible yet yielding an interesting homemade preserve that enhances drinks and desserts.
