Easy Applesauce

This easy applesauce is made by cooking peeled, chopped apples with water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt in an Instant Pot until soft. The result is a lightly spiced, smooth or chunky applesauce depending on mashing preferences, suitable for eating fresh or storing.

Description

Easy Applesauce is prepared by combining peeled, seeded, and chopped apples (a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), water, fresh lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt in an Instant Pot. The apples cook under high pressure for 5 minutes, followed by natural pressure release and mashing or pureeing to desired texture. The cinnamon adds warmth while lemon juice brightens and prevents browning.

The cooked apples yield a soft applesauce that can be mashed to a chunky consistency or pureed smooth with a blender or immersion blender, adapting to personal preference. The combination of apple varieties balances tartness and sweetness.

This applesauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 to 10 days or frozen for up to 3 months, making it convenient for future use. It can also be prepared on the stovetop or in a slow cooker with adjusted times.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 lbs apple peeled, seeded, and chopped (I use Granny Smith and Honeycrisp
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Add the chopped apples, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt to the Instant Pot. Stir to combine. Put the lid on the Instant Pot, make sure the pressure knob is in the sealing position. Select the Manual function and high pressure and adjust time to 5 minutes.
  2. When it beeps, let the steam release naturally for 5 minutes, then carefully use the quick release valve to release the remaining pressure. Use caution, the steam is hot!
  3. Remove the lid and stir the applesauce with a wooden spoon.
  4. You can use a potato masher to break up the applesauce or if you want really smooth applesauce you can puree the applesauce with an immersion blender or blender.

Notes

  • The applesauce can also be prepared in a slow cooker or on the stovetop if you prefer those methods.
  • Store the applesauce in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Use a potato masher for chunky applesauce or blend for a smoother texture.
