Easy Baked Ravioli

Easy baked ravioli layers fresh cheese-filled ravioli with sautéed ground beef, garlic, onions, and marinara sauce, then topped with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese before baking. The assembled casserole develops browned, bubbly cheese on top, with tender pasta and a meaty tomato sauce underneath. This hearty baked dish is convenient and satisfying for a family meal.

Description

This baked ravioli recipe starts by sautéing chopped onion and garlic in olive oil, then browning lean ground beef until cooked through. Excess fat is drained, and part of the marinara sauce is stirred in and heated. In a greased baking dish, a layer of marinara sauce is spread before adding half the uncooked cheese ravioli in an even layer. Half the beef mixture, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese are layered on top, then the process is repeated for a second layer. The baking dish is covered with foil and baked at 350°F for 30 minutes, allowing the ravioli to cook through and the flavors to meld.

The final dish features tender ravioli filled with cheese, combined with a savory beef and tomato sauce. The cheeses on top melt and slightly brown, providing a contrast in texture. Using refrigerated ravioli reduces cooking time; frozen ravioli requires additional baking time. This casserole is filling and can be paired with a simple salad or garlic bread for a complete dinner.

Refrigerated cheese and spinach ravioli preferred; frozen ravioli will need 10-15 more minutes baking time. The ravioli amount can vary slightly without affecting the recipe.Check the original recipe source for make-ahead instructions, substitutions, and step-by-step photos.Nutritional info is an estimate and can vary due to ingredients used.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 medium onion chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef extra lean
  • 3-4 cloves garlic minced
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 3 cups marinara sauce divided, one 24 oz. jar
  • 20 ounces cheese ravioli see note, uncooked
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and move the rack to the top third of the oven. Prep the cheeses.
  2. Add the oil and onion to a skillet and sauté for 4-5 minutes over medium-high heat.
  3. Add in the ground beef and garlic. Cook it, breaking the beef up with your spoon as you go along, until it's browned and cooked through (about 8 minutes). If there's a lot of excess fat, spoon it out. Season with a bit of salt & pepper.
  4. Add 2 cups of the marinara sauce to the ground beef mixture (give it a good stir and let it heat through).
  5. Pour the remaining 1 cup marinara sauce into a greased 9x13 baking dish (spread it evenly along the bottom).
  6. Add half the ravioli to the baking dish (some overlap is totally fine, but try to arrange it in a fairly even layer), then add half the beef mixture followed by half of each of the cheeses. Repeat this process so you've got 2 layers and it's finished with the layer of cheese on top.
  7. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Take the foil off and broil for a few minutes so you've got a nice, bubbly, browned cheese layer, then serve immediately.
