Easy Beer Bread

Easy Beer Bread is a straightforward quick bread made with self-rising flour, sugar, beer, melted butter, and salt. The beer acts as a leavening agent and adds subtle flavor, resulting in a moist bread with a slightly crisp crust. This one-bowl recipe requires minimal mixing, delivering a soft crumb perfect with butter, soups, or as a simple snack.

Description

The bread combines self-rising flour and sugar with beer, melted butter, and salt to form a batter-like dough. Using self-rising flour simplifies the leavening process; alternatively, all-purpose flour can be combined with baking powder and salt to replicate this. The beer introduces carbonation and flavor, helpful for leavening and moisture.

After mixing just until combined, the batter is poured into a greased loaf pan and baked at 375°F for 50 to 60 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The resulting bread has a tender crumb with a golden crust accented by butter melted over the top. Variations can include garlic powder, herbs, or cheese for additional flavor.

The recipe cautions against overmixing to prevent dense bread. Substitutions such as using seltzer water instead of beer may affect flavor and require extra seasonings. Easy Beer Bread serves well alongside meals, with soups or on its own as a quick bread option.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups self-rising flour or all purpose flour with baking powder, see notes
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 12 ounces beer room temperature
  • cup butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease an 8"x4" loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl whisk self-rising flour and sugar until well combined.
  3. Add beer, melted butter, and salt. Stir to combine.
  4. Pour the batter in the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Cool before slicing.

Notes

  • If self-rising flour is unavailable, substitute with all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 4 teaspoons baking powder.
  • Seltzer water can replace beer but may require additional seasonings for flavor.
  • Do not skip the salt and sugar or reduce butter, as these contribute essential flavor to the bread.
  • Optional seasonings like garlic powder, dried herbs, or cheeses can be added to change the flavor profile.
  • Mix the dough only until moistened to avoid dense bread.
