Easy Caramel Sauce Recipe
Description
The sauce starts by whisking together light brown sugar, unsalted butter, salt, half-and-half (or a mix of cream and milk), and vanilla extract in a saucepan over low heat. The mixture is cooked for 6 to 9 minutes while whisking constantly until it thickens and loses its watery consistency.
Once cooled slightly, the sauce continues to thicken, producing a creamy caramel suitable for drizzling over desserts or mixing into drinks. The balance of brown sugar sweetness and butter richness is enhanced by a touch of salt, which can be adjusted if salted butter is used.
This caramel sauce stores well refrigerated for up to two weeks in an airtight container and can be gently reheated to return it to a pourable consistency. Its smooth texture and straightforward preparation make it a versatile accompaniment.
Ingredients
- 1 cup light brown sugar packed
- 4 Tbsp butter unsalted
- 1 tsp salt or to taste, sea salt
- 1/2 cup half and half or use equal parts heavy cream and milk
- 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a small/medium saucepan and simmer over low heat, whisking constantly or until thickened and no longer watery (6-9 min). Keep in mind it thickens more as it cools. Serve warm, at room temperature or chilled. Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 2 weeks. You can re-warm it slightly to make it more drizzle-able.
Notes
- If using salted butter, reduce the added salt to half a teaspoon or adjust to taste.
- Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
- Rewarm gently before serving if the sauce thickens too much when chilled.
