Easy Caramelized Apples
Description
This preparation features peeled and small cubed firm apples combined with butter, brown sugar, and a splash of water. Heating initially over medium-high melts the sugar then continuing the gentle simmer softens the apple pieces while the sugar darkens to a golden caramel color. Adding cinnamon near the end infuses a warm, aromatic spice note without overpowering the natural apple sweetness.
The texture of the finished caramelized apples is tender but not mushy, with a glossy, syrupy coating. This mix can be served warm over pancakes, ice cream, or yogurt, or cooled and stored as a preserve.
Firm apple varieties like Granny Smith or Braeburn are preferred for their texture and balance; softer apples will break down too much during cooking. After cooling, storing in a tightly sealed jar in the refrigerator keeps the flavors fresh and thickens the sauce. It should be consumed within a week, and freezing is not recommended.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon butter
- ⅓ cup brown sugar 60 grams, lightly packed
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 large apple peeled, cored, small cubed
- ½-1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- In a medium size pot melt the butter, then add the water, sugar and chopped peeled apples.
- Stir and cook for about 3 minutes over medium/high heat just until the sugar has melted, then lower the heat to medium/low and continue cooking and stirring often for about 8-10 minutes, add the cinnamon in the last couple of minutes. The apples should be tender and the sauce a golden brown colour.
- Move to a clean glass jar, let cool or use warm. Once it is cool it should be refrigerated, the longer it sits the thicker the sauce will become. Enjoy!
Notes
- Use firm apples such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Fuji to maintain texture during cooking.
- Granny Smith apples provide a tart contrast that balances the caramel sweetness well.
- After cooling, store the caramelized apples in a jar with a tight lid in the refrigerator for up to one week.
- Freezing the caramelized apples is not recommended as texture and flavor degrade.
