Easy Cheese Fondue Recipe
Description
The Easy Cheese Fondue Recipe starts by rubbing a garlic clove inside the saucepan to infuse subtle garlic aroma. Dry white wine is simmered to create a hot base, then shredded Swiss and Gruyere cheeses tossed in cornstarch are added gradually off heat to prevent scorching, allowing the cheeses to melt slowly and evenly. The cornstarch helps achieve a velvety, stable texture, preventing separation. Kirsch or sherry adds a mild fruitiness, while nutmeg and black pepper lend warmth and depth.
The fondue is served warm with cubes of French bread for dipping, combining a robust cheese and wine flavor with the bread's chewy texture. This fondue is comforting yet elegant, suitable for sharing at small gatherings or family meals centered on interactive dining.
Optional substitutions include swapping half the cheese for mild cheddar for a less sharp flavor or adding Brie for extra creaminess. Using dry white wine ensures the right acidity balance without sweetness. The technique of slow melting and adding cheese gradually is important for smooth consistency.
Ingredients
- 1 clove garlic whole
- 1 cup white wine dry
- 8 ounces swiss cheese or Emmental, shredded
- 4 ounces gruyere cheese shredded
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon kirsch optional but delicious, or sherry
- ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 pinch black pepper
- 1 loaf French bread for dipping
Instructions
- Cut the garlic clove in half and rub the cut side inside the saucepan. Discard the clove (or save it for another use).
- Add the wine to the saucepan and bring it to a simmer over medium heat, let simmer for 1 minute.
- In a bowl, gently toss all shredded cheeses with cornstarch. Set aside.
- Reduce heat to low and add cheese, a few tablespoons at a time gently stirring until melted before adding more. This should be done very slowly.
- Once melted, stir in kirsh, nutmeg, and pepper.
- Serve warm with bread for dipping.
Notes
- Replacing half of the Swiss and Gruyere with mild cheddar will mellow the fondue's flavor.
- Adding Brie cheese can contribute a creamier texture and richness.
