Easy Chicken Gravy
Description
Easy Chicken Gravy starts with a classic roux of butter and flour cooked until lightly golden to develop a subtle nutty flavor. Gradually whisking in unsalted chicken stock and chicken base creates a well-rounded savory base. Onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika bring balanced seasoning without overpowering the gentle chicken taste. The gravy is simmered carefully to thicken and smoothness, with the option to stir in heavy cream for a richer finish. Cooking over medium heat and scraping the pan edges helps prevent lumps and ensures even thickening.
The finished gravy has a creamy yet fluid consistency suitable for pouring over meats, poultry, or side dishes. Its mild seasoning complements rather than competes with the meal, making it suitable for everyday cooking as well as more formal dinners.
The recipe allows whisking in additional broth if a thinner gravy is desired. It’s best served warm immediately after preparing to maintain its creamy texture and flavor.
Ingredients
- 6 Tbsp unsalted butter cut into 1-Tbsp pieces
- 6 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 to 3 cups chicken stock unsalted
- 1 Tbsp chicken base I recommend this one
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- salt and black pepper, to taste as needed
- 3 Tbsp heavy cream (optional)
Instructions
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and cook until lightly golden brown, about 3 minutes.
- While whisking slowly pour in chicken stock. Stir in chicken base, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika, then season with salt if needed and black pepper to taste.
- Bring mixture to a light simmer stirring constantly (scrape those bottom edges while stirring as well).
- Thin with up to 1/2 cup more broth as needed, note that gravy with thicken a bit as it cools.
- Stir in heavy cream if using for a creamier gravy and serve warm.
