Easy Chili Recipe

This Easy Chili Recipe is a savory stew of ground beef, beans, and crushed tomatoes, seasoned with chili powder, cumin, and garlic. The slow simmering thickens the flavors and texture, while optional toppings like sour cream and cheese add creaminess. Served hot, it makes a hearty meal with balanced spicy and earthy notes.

Description

The chili begins by sautéing diced onion in olive oil until translucent, then cooking ground beef with salt until browned. Tomato paste, garlic, chili powder, cumin, and black pepper are added and cooked briefly to release aromas. Canned crushed tomatoes, pinto and kidney beans, and beef broth are stirred in before simmering uncovered for 20 to 30 minutes, allowing flavors to meld and the chili to thicken.

The resulting chili has a rich texture combining tender beans and hearty ground beef in a tomato-based sauce with warm spices. The dish can be customized with salt and pepper after cooking. Toppings such as sour cream and shredded cheese are optional and provide creamy and melty contrasts.

Chili is commonly served in bowls as a main meal, often accompanied by bread, rice, or tortilla chips. Its thick, robust nature makes it filling and flavorful, suitable for casual dinners or gatherings.

Nutritional information is estimated for six servings without toppings.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion diced, large yellow or white
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup tomato paste 66g
  • 4 cloves garlic minced or pressed
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons cumin ground
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 crushed tomatoes or diced tomatoes, 14-ounce can
  • 1 pinto beans drained and rinsed, 15-ounce can
  • 1 Kidney Beans drained and rinsed, canned 15-ounce
  • 1 cup beef broth

Toppings

  • sour cream optional
  • cheese optional, shredded

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Once hot add onion and cook until onions just begin to turn translucent around the edges, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add ground beef and salt, and cook, stirring often, until beef is browned. If the beef released an excessive amount of fat (more than a tablespoon or two), you can drain the meat or use a paper towel to absorb some of the grease
  3. Stir in tomato paste, garlic, and spices, and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until aromatic.
  4. Stir in tomatoes (with their juices), beans, and broth. Bring to a simmer and simmer the chili uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 30 minutes, until the meat is cooked through and chili has thickened.
  5. Taste and add salt and pepper if necessary. Spoon into bowls, top with sour cream and cheese if desired, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Approximate nutritional information applies to six servings without sour cream or cheese toppings.
