Ingredients

Servings
  • Cranberry frozen cleaned, fresh, 12-ounce bag
  • ¾ to 1 cup granulated sugar depending on the level of sweetness you desire, or maple syrup
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 apple peeled, cored, and chopped, Granny Smith
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • ¼ cup water
  • lemon about ¼ cup, juice and zest from 1
  • teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring the orange juice, zest, sugar, and water to a simmer. Add the cranberries, apple, nutmeg, salt, and cinnamon stick, and increase to high heat.
  2. Once the mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until cranberries burst, stirring or swirling the pan occasionally.
  3. Carefully taste and adjust the sugar as needed. When cranberries have broken and the sauce has thickened to your preference, about 10 to 15 minutes, remove from the heat and transfer to a heat-proof bowl to cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for later use.
