Easy Creamy Apple Coleslaw Recipe
Description
Easy Creamy Apple Coleslaw blends shredded cabbage with crisp apple matchsticks tossed in a smooth dressing combining quality mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar for tang, and honey for sweetness. Ground black pepper and onion powder add subtle spice, balancing the flavor. The mixture is tossed thoroughly and can be served immediately or chilled for at least 30 minutes to develop deeper flavors.
This coleslaw offers versatility, pairing well as a side salad or as a topping for sandwiches, burgers, and pulled pork sliders. The recipe adapts easily with ingredient substitutions and additions such as purple cabbage, dried fruits, herbs, spices, nuts, proteins, and alternate sweeteners, allowing for seasonal or personal variations.
Storage recommendations specify airtight refrigeration for up to three days. While freezing coleslaw with mayonnaise-based dressings is less ideal, vinegar-only dressings freeze better, and freezing the components separately can preserve texture. The recipe includes tips for sweetening, texture variation, and flavor tweaks to customize as desired.
Ingredients
- ½ cup mayonnaise use a quality mayo, I like Avocado or Olive oil mayo
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2-4 teaspoons honey Use more if a sweeter dressing is desired
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper ground
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 9-12 ounce package coleslaw mix I like the kind with multiple colors of cabbage for pops of color, or shred your own, if you want to add purple cabbage, slice or shred ½ cup to add to the mix.
- 1 small apple cut into matchsticks, use sweet apples like Gala or Crispin, or sweet-tart apples, like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, add the mayonnaise (½ cup), apple cider vinegar (2 TBL), honey (2-4 tsps), ground pepper (¼ tsp) and onion powder (1 tsp). Whisk to combine. If a sweeter coleslaw is desired use the higher amount of honey.
- Add the coleslaw mix (9-12 ounces) and apples (1 small apple, cut into matchsticks), and toss with tongs to thoroughly mix the contents. Serve immediately or for better flavor refrigerate for 30 or more minutes.
- This recipe is naturally gluten-free and doubles or triples easily.
Notes
- Store coleslaw in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days; color changes from purple cabbage do not affect taste.
- For freezing, vinegar-based dressings freeze better than mayonnaise-based; consider freezing slaw and dressing separately for best results.
- Variations include adding dried fruits, nuts, fresh herbs, spices, or substituting honey with sugar-free alternatives.
- For a thicker, sweeter dressing, increase honey or try maple syrup; adjust seasonings like Dijon mustard or soy sauce for tang.
- This slaw can be served immediately but tastes best after chilling to allow flavors to meld, making it suitable for make-ahead.
- Pairs well as a side dish or on sandwiches, burgers, and sliders for added crunch and flavor.
