Easy Crispy Air Fryer Turkey Wings Recipe

This recipe details how to prepare turkey wings with a flavorful dry rub and achieve crispy skin using an air fryer. The wings are seasoned with a mixture including smoked paprika, brown sugar, herbs, and optional cayenne for heat. Cooking in batches ensures even crispness, creating a juicy and textured result ideal as a main dish or appetizer.

Description

Easy Crispy Air Fryer Turkey Wings are seasoned with a dry rub containing smoked paprika, brown sugar, garlic and onion powders, thyme, oregano, salt, and optional cayenne pepper. The wings are coated with oil and the rub, optionally marinated up to 24 hours beforehand for deeper flavor. Cooking in a preheated air fryer at around 370°F crisps the outside while retaining juicy meat inside.

The recipe recommends placing wings in a single layer to ensure proper air circulation and crispiness. It also notes variations like baking in the oven if no air fryer is available, and advises using a meat thermometer to verify the internal temperature reaches 165°F for safety.

Serving suggestions include pairing with hot honey, gravy made from drippings, or dipping sauces. Leftovers can be refrigerated or frozen, with reheating instructions to restore crispness. Using split wings helps them fit better in the air fryer basket for even cooking.

Additional tips cover catching drippings in air fryer models prone to grease accumulation and provide a method to make gravy from pan drippings with flour, broth, vinegar, and butter.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2-3 pounds turkey wings purchase split turkey wings, or cut whole wings up
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil

Turkey Wing Rub

  • 2-3 teaspoons kosher salt about 1 teaspoon per pound of wings
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½-1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • ½ -1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons thyme dried
  • 2 teaspoons oregano dried
  • cayenne pepper optional, dash of

Instructions

Optional: Add Dry Rub 24 hours ahead

  1. If desired, pat dry the turkey wings, then in a large bowl rub them with oil and sprinkle with spices up to 24 hours ahead of time, keeping them covered in the fridge and bringing out 30 minutes before air frying.
  2. Preheat air fryer to 370° F (188° C) and make sure the air fryer basket or tray is in the air fryer. *Note that all air fryers heat a little differently, if using a countertop-style air fryer, you may need to increase the heat slightly and bake a few minutes longer.
  3. Pat turkey wings dry with paper towels and place in a large bowl. Drizzle with oil and turn to coat.
  4. Combine turkey wing rub ingredients in a small bowl, sprinkle turkey rub all over wings, then turn with your hands rubbing the turkey seasonings all over the wings. (At this point, the wings may dry brine in the fridge up to 24 hours.)
  5. Place wings in a single layer (do not overlap, they won’t crisp or cook accurately) doing in batches if necessary. Air fry for 10-15 minutes, flip, and continue cooking for another 5 minutes or so.

Notes

  • Ensure turkey wings reach an internal temperature of 165°F using a meat thermometer before serving.
  • For countertop air fryers, place a tray underneath wings to catch excess grease.
  • Use turkey drippings to make gravy by whisking with flour, broth, vinegar, and butter over medium heat.
  • Choose split turkey wings for easier fitting in air fryer baskets and better cooking.
  • If unavailable, bake wings in a 400°F oven for about 30 minutes on a lined baking sheet.
  • Store cooked wings in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze up to 4 months; reheat in air fryer at 330-350°F for about 8 minutes.
  • Seasoning blends like Creole or steakhouse rubs can be used in place of the dry rub for different flavors.
