Easy Crock Pot Pork Shoulder Recipe
Description
The Easy Crock Pot Pork Shoulder Recipe starts with a 3-pound pork shoulder seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. The meat is placed on sliced onions in a slow cooker, covered with BBQ sauce, and cooked on low for about 8 hours until very tender.
Slow cooking breaks down fat and connective tissue, creating a juicy and flavorful roast that can be shredded with forks. The onions and BBQ sauce lend moisture and additional aromatic and tangy flavor to the meat throughout cooking. After resting, the pork is shredded and optionally blended with more BBQ sauce to suit taste preferences.
This dish pairs well with buns or tacos, making it versatile for casual meals. Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to five days and can be frozen for up to two months. The recipe advises thorough thawing if using frozen pork shoulder for best results.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds pork shoulder boneless or bone-in
- ½ onion sliced, large
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup BBQ sauce
Instructions
- Remove the skin and trim off large chunks of fat from your pork shoulder if necessary. Rinse and then dry well with paper towels.
- In a small-medium sized bowl, mix together garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper.
- Rub the seasonings into the pork roast.
- Add the sliced onion to the bottom of the crockpot.
- Add seasoned pork shoulder roast on top.
- Pour in your favorite BBQ sauce.
- Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 8 hours or until fork tender.
- After the pork has cooked, remove it to a cutting board or plate and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Shred with 2 forks to pull the meat apart. Add more bbq sauce if you prefer.
- Serve warm with buns or tacos.
Notes
- Store leftover pork shoulder in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
- Thaw frozen pork shoulder completely in the refrigerator before cooking to ensure even slow cooking.
