Easy Crockpot Hot Chocolate
Description
Easy Crockpot Hot Chocolate is made by whisking heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, semi-sweet chocolate chips, unsweetened cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract in a slow cooker. Slow cooking on low allows the chocolate to melt gradually and blend evenly with the dairy, creating a smooth and thick hot chocolate. The recipe recommends stirring regularly during the two hours of heating to maintain even heating and prevent clumps or burning.
The result is a warm, creamy drink with a deep chocolate flavor balanced by sweetness from the condensed milk and vanilla. It is rich without being overly thick and can be topped with marshmallows or whipped cream for a classic hot chocolate finish. The preparation is hands-off, making it convenient for serving a crowd or cozy nights.
The recipe also includes advice for quicker preparation using a microwave, and instructions for making the hot chocolate ahead of time and reheating it in the slow cooker. These options provide flexibility depending on how much time is available. Using whole milk is recommended for richness, but lower-fat milk can work as well.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup chocolate chips (I use semi sweet)
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
- 2 cups milk whole is best, but skim works!
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a small slow cooker, whisk together all ingredients.
- Cover, and heat on low for 2 hours, whisking regularly.
- Pour into mugs, top with marshmallows and/or whipped cream.
- Devour.
Notes
- To speed up preparation, melt ingredients in the microwave in 1-minute increments, whisking often until smooth, then keep warm in a slow cooker.
- This hot chocolate can be made ahead and refrigerated; whisk well before reheating in the slow cooker.
- Use whole milk for best creaminess but skim milk is an acceptable substitute.
- Regular whisking during slow cooking helps maintain a smooth texture and prevent burning.
