Easy Crostini Recipe
Description
This recipe involves slicing a full baguette into thin rounds, coating each slice with melted butter mixed with olive oil, and baking until golden and crisp. The topping layers alternate creamy brie cheese slices with tart apple slices lightly treated with lemon juice to prevent browning, followed by delicate strips of prosciutto and crunchy roasted pecans. A final drizzle of honey adds a subtle sweetness that balances the savory and tart flavors.
The toast base is thin and crisp, providing a crunchy contrast to the soft brie and tender apple. Prosciutto lends a salty richness, while pecans add texture and a nutty flavor. This blend yields a sophisticated appetizer or snack with pleasant layering of textures and flavors.
Additional topping variations include combinations with diced tomatoes and basil, smoked salmon with cream cheese, goat cheese with honey, roasted garlic hummus, and others. This versatility makes the base crostini a flexible platform for many flavor profiles.
Ingredients
For the Crostini:
- 1 full size baguette sliced into 1/4 inch slices
- 3 TB butter melted
- 1 TB olive oil
For the Toppings:
- 2 whole apple cut into 1/4" slices
- lemon juice fresh, for sprinkling over apples
- 8 oz Brie cheese wheel, cut into 1/4" slices
- 3 oz prosciutto
- ½ cup pecans roasted, salted
- ⅓ cup honey
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375F, with rack on upper middle position. Line a large baking sheet with foil. Place baguette slices in a single layer on baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, combine melted butter with olive oil. Use a pastry brush to brush butter mixture evenly on both sides each baguette slice. Bake 8-10 minutes or until slices become golden and crispy. If needed, flip crostini over to allow crisping on the bottom side for a few minutes.
- Meanwhile, slice apples into 1/4 inch slivers and sprinkle with fresh lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Place a slice of brie over crostini, followed by apple slices. Gently slice each prosciutto piece in half and place over the apple slices. Top each crostini with a few pecans. Drizzle with honey and serve.
Notes
- Try alternative toppings such as diced tomatoes with basil or smoked salmon with cream cheese for variety.
- Brie and fig jam or goat cheese with warm honey offer savory-sweet combinations.
- Roasted garlic hummus or bruschetta with Roquefort cheese and peppers are excellent additional choices.
