Easy Cut Out Sugar Cookies

Easy Cut Out Sugar Cookies combine simple ingredients like butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla to create a tender dough that holds its shape well when rolled and cut. Chilling the dough before baking helps maintain crisp edges without browning too much, resulting in pale, soft cookies ideal for decorating or enjoying plain. The balance of sweetness and a lightly buttery texture makes these cookies adaptable for festive occasions or everyday treats. This recipe yields multiple dozen cookies depending on thickness and cutter size.

Description

Easy Cut Out Sugar Cookies are made by creaming butter and sugar with eggs and vanilla, then gently mixing in flour and salt to form a firm, pliable dough. Rolling the dough to about 3/8 inch thickness and refrigerating helps maintain shape during baking. These cookies bake at a moderate temperature until the edges are set but not browned, keeping them soft and slightly chewy inside. Their subtle vanilla flavor and smooth texture make them suitable for cutting into various shapes and decorating or serving plain. The dough is versatile enough to handle repeated rolling and cutting, allowing efficient cookie shape formation.

The minimal ingredients emphasize the pure butter and sugar flavor, with room for adding your own touches in decorating. These cookies hold together without spreading significantly, giving clean edges. They cool to a delicate but sturdy cookie that works well on its own or with icing and sprinkles. The straightforward technique and common pantry ingredients make this recipe accessible for home bakers seeking a reliable cut-out sugar cookie.

Depending on how thick you roll the dough and the size of cookie cutters, you can expect anywhere from three to five dozen cookies. Chilling the dough before baking also aids in handling and freshness. These cookies keep well stored in airtight containers, maintaining their texture and flavor over several days.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour 520 grams
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 grams
  • 1 1/2 cups butter room temperature) 12 ounces, salted
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 300 grams
  • 2 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 10 grams

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the flour and salt with a wire whisk. 4 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt
  2. In a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar together. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat on medium speed until mixed well. 1 1/2 cups salted butter, 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, 2 large eggs, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  3. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the flour mixture. Mix just until combined, being careful not to over mix.
  4. Divide the dough in half. On a floured surface, roll out one piece of dough to 3/8" thick. Use cookie cutters and cut as many shapes as possible, re-rolling the dough scraps and cutting again.
  5. Place the shapes on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Refrigerate the cookie dough for an hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 325ºF. Bake the cookies for 12-13 minutes, pulling the cookies out just before they start to brown.
  7. Allow the cookies to cool for 2-3 minutes, then transfer them to a flat surface to cool. Once the cookies are cooled, decorate as desired.

Notes

  • Use stick butter at room temperature, not margarine or tub butter, for best texture and flavor.
  • To shape cookies easily, chill dough for at least an hour before rolling and cutting.
  • The number of cookies depends on dough thickness and cutter size; expect 3 to 5 dozen from this recipe.
