Easy Everyday Steamed Broccoli

Easy Everyday Steamed Broccoli features fresh broccoli florets lightly steamed until tender-crisp and dressed with a simple lemon, olive oil, and garlic powder dressing. The seasoning adds brightness and subtle savory notes, enhancing the natural flavor of the broccoli without masking it. This preparation preserves the vegetable's texture and color, making it a straightforward side dish to include in meals.

Description

This recipe emphasizes fresh broccoli cut into bite-size florets and peeled stalks, steamed gently over boiling water until just tender enough to pierce with a fork, usually around 5 minutes. The quick steaming process retains the broccoli's bright green color and slight crispness, avoiding mushiness.

While steaming, a dressing is prepared from freshly squeezed lemon juice, extra-virgin olive oil, kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. This mixture highlights the broccoli's natural flavors with a citrusy tang, savory seasoning, and a hint of garlic aroma.

After steaming, the broccoli is tossed with the dressing and served immediately for the best texture and flavor balance. It works well as a simple side dish complementing a wide range of mains.

If no steamer is available, alternative methods include microwaving or briefly boiling the broccoli in water. To avoid overcooking and limp texture, it’s advisable to remove the broccoli from heat as soon as tender and dress it right away. Leftover steamed broccoli can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days and gently reheated at low microwave power, or incorporated cold into salads.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound broccoli fresh

Dressing:

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil extra-virgin
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt or ¼ teaspoon of any other salt, including Morton kosher salt, Diamond Crystal brand
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Add 1 inch of water to a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Rinse the broccoli. Use a vegetable peeler to peel the stalks. Cut the broccoli into bite-size florets and pieces and place them in a steamer basket.
  3. Carefully place the steamer basket in the saucepan and cover.
  4. Steam the broccoli until tender-crisp. Start checking after 5 minutes. As soon as a fork can pierce the stalks, the broccoli is done and should be removed from the saucepan.
  5. While the broccoli is steaming, in a small bowl, whisk the lemon juice, olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. Place the broccoli in a bowl. Pour the dressing on top and gently mix. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • If a steamer is unavailable, microwave or boil broccoli briefly until fork-tender, then drain promptly to avoid sogginess.
  • Remove broccoli from heat as soon as tender; keep warm loosely covered rather than leaving in the steamer basket to prevent limp texture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; reheat gently in microwave at 50% power or use cold in salads.
