Easy French Toast
Description
This recipe for Easy French Toast is centered on using sturdier bread varieties like country-style loaf, brioche, or sourdough to prevent sogginess. The bread slices are soaked briefly in a beaten mixture of eggs, half and half or cream, and vanilla extract, absorbing enough to create a custardy interior without becoming too soft. Cooking in butter over medium heat creates a golden crust with a slight crispness while keeping the center soft.
This method allows preparing multiple slices efficiently using a skillet that fits two slices at once. The finished French toast can be topped with powdered sugar or syrup according to preference, offering flexibility for serving. It suits a comforting morning meal or an indulgent treat.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days and reheated in a toaster for a crisp edge or microwave for softness. Freezing individual slices on a baking sheet before transferring to bags allows for convenient reheating directly from frozen, extending the recipe's usefulness over several meals.
Ingredients
- 4 egg
- 1 tablespoon half and half or cream
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 lices bread (use something sturdy, not white, soft sandwich bread)
- powdered sugar for serving, or syrup
Instructions
- Break four eggs into a shallow bowl. Add half & half or cream and vanilla. Beat together well.
- Heat a skillet large enough to hold two slices of bread (about a 10" works well) over medium heat. Add 1 tblsp butter to skillet.
- While butter is melting, place a slice of bread into egg mixture and allow it to sit for a few seconds soaking up the eggy mixture. Turn over to second side.
- Lift bread with spatula and place in heated skillet. Repeat with second slice of bread.
- Cook 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
- Turn and cook approximately 2 minutes on second side. Repeat with remaining two slices of bread and tblsp of butter.
- Transfer to serving plate. Top with powdered sugar or syrup.
Notes
- Use sturdy bread such as country-style loaf, brioche, or sourdough to prevent falling apart during soaking and cooking.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3-4 days; reheat in a toaster for crispness or microwave for a softer result.
- Freeze individually on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag; reheat directly from frozen in toaster or oven.
