Easy Fried Halloumi Recipe with Warmed Honey

This Easy Fried Halloumi recipe produces pan-seared cheese sticks with a golden, crispy crust and soft, slightly squeaky interior. The fried halloumi is finished with toasted sesame seeds, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, and drizzled honey warmed to enhance its fluidity. The combination offers a balance of salty, sweet, and mildly spicy flavors.

Description

Halloumi cheese, cut into half-inch sticks and patted dry, is fried in olive oil over medium-high heat until each side develops a golden-brown crust. The cheese remains firm yet tender inside. Simultaneously, honey is gently warmed to loosen it, allowing it to be drizzled evenly over the finished fried halloumi.

The dish is then garnished with toasted sesame seeds for a nutty accent and red pepper flakes for a touch of heat. This preparation can be served immediately as a warm appetizer, complementing other Mediterranean dishes or fresh fruit arranged on the platter.

The balance of textures—from crispy exterior to soft center—and the layering of flavors with the sweet honey and spice make this recipe straightforward yet distinctive. It requires minimal ingredients and little time, suitable for quick cooking and entertaining.

Ingredients

Servings
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • 8 ounces halloumi cheese pat dry and cut into 1/2-inch sticks
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds toasted
  • red pepper flakes I used Aleppo pepper, crushed

Instructions

  1. In a non-stick pan, heat 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil over medium-high heat.
  2. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add the halloumi sticks in one single layer, making sure not to crowd the pan. Cook for 1 to 2 minute on one side, until a golden brown crust forms. Using a pair of tongs, turn over and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes watching for that beautiful crust to form.
  3. Meanwhile, warm your honey either in a skillet or put your tightly-closed jar in warm water to help the honey loosen a bit.
  4. Transfer the fried halloumi to a serving plate and sprinkle with sesame seeds and a dash of red chili flakes or Aleppo pepper. Drizzle with the warmed honey all over (serve unused honey in a small bowl to the side).
  5. If you like, arrange some fruit such as grapes, figs, or berries on the same platter around the cheese. Serve immediately!

Notes

  • If halloumi is unavailable locally, it can be sourced online through specialty stores.
  • Serve the fried halloumi immediately while warm and soft for best texture.
  • This cheese works well as part of a cheese board, mezze platter, or atop salads like roasted asparagus and tomato with halloumi.
  • Pair with a drizzle of za'atar or other Mediterranean seasonings to vary flavors.
