Easy Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich
Description
The sandwich is assembled by layering slices of muenster cheese and honey ham between two slices of buttered white bread. Cooking takes place in a skillet over medium-low heat with butter, allowing the bread to toast evenly and the cheese to melt without burning. The method includes pressing the sandwich gently for even contact and turning to cook both sides to a golden brown. The technique emphasizes gentle heat to prevent burning early and ensure a thoroughly melted cheese center.
Serving the grilled ham and cheese warm takes advantage of the gooey, melted cheese and crispy bread texture. It can be a simple lunch, quick dinner, or comforting snack. The sandwich pairs well on its own or alongside a salad or soup for a more complete meal.
Leftovers can be stored with ham and cheese separated from bread to keep freshness and reheated in the oven or skillet for best texture. Freezing is possible when tightly wrapped, with reheating instructions to restore melty and warm qualities. Prepping parts like pre-sliced ingredients or buttered bread ahead can save time when cooking.
Ingredients
- 2 lices Muenster cheese such as American, mozzarella, Colby, Cheddar, Havarti, Swiss, fontina, Monterey jack, pepper jack, or provolone, or any melty cheese
- 2 lices honey ham smoked ham, smoked deli turkey, or roasted deli ham
- 2 lices country white bread (you can use any bread you have on hand)
- 1 Tablespoon butter salted, softened
Instructions
- Layout 1 slice of bread on a cutting board or work surface—add two slices of cheese and the two slices of honey ham; top with the remaining slice of bread. Press down lightly.
- Heat ½ tablespoon butter in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Once melted, add the sandwiches and cook until the bread toasts and the cheese is slightly melted for 3 to 5 minutes. Flip with a spatula and add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the pan.
- Cook until the other side is toasted and the cheese is melted, about 3 minutes more, adjusting the heat as needed to keep the bread from burning before the cheese melts (lightly press down on the sandwich to encourage even browning and to help melt the cheese; be gentle, don’t smash it). Serve the Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich immediately. Enjoy!
Notes
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, keeping ham and cheese separate from the bread to maintain freshness.
- Reheat sandwiches in a 350°F oven covered with foil for 10-15 minutes, or in a skillet over medium heat until cheese melts and bread crisps.
- Freeze wrapped sandwiches up to 2 months; reheat similarly after thawing to restore texture.
- Pre-slice ham and cheese and butter bread ahead to streamline assembly and cooking on serving day.
