Easy Grilled Onions in Foil

Easy Grilled Onions in Foil offer a tender, smoky side dish made by seasoning thinly sliced yellow or Vidalia onions with onion and garlic powder, salt, pepper, and butter, then cooking them in a foil packet on the grill. The slow grilling steeps the onions in savory flavors while softening them, making these onions a flavorful addition to grilled meals or sandwiches.

Description

Get the Recipe Easy Grilled Onions in Foil features thinly sliced yellow or Vidalia onions seasoned with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and freshly ground pepper, enhanced with diced unsalted butter. The onions are placed in a foil packet sealed to retain moisture and cooked over indirect heat on a grill heated to 450°F for 25-30 minutes. Shaking or stirring halfway through ensures even cooking. This method produces tender, sweet, and flavorful grilled onions with a slight smoky aroma from the grilling process.

The finished onions have a softened, juicy texture and savory depth from the combined spices and butter, suitable as a condiment or side. These grilled onions can complement grilled meats, burgers, or vegetables well.

The recipe easily scales since one onion serves about two people, and doubling is simple for more servings. Gently opening the foil packet allows steam to escape before stirring and serving. Using heavy-duty foil helps prevent any direct heat burning, while the sealed packet technique steams and grills the onions at the same time for evenly cooked results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 large yellow onion thinly sliced, or Vidalia onion
  • 1/4 /4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 /4 tsp garlic powder
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste, freshly ground
  • 1 Tablespoon butter diced, unsalted

Instructions

  1. Heat grill to 450°F.
  2. Cut a piece of heavy duty foil (or two pieces if using regular foil) approximately 22 inches long.
  3. Place thinly sliced onion in the center of the foil and toss with onion and garlic powder, and salt and pepper. Dot the top with butter.
  4. Pull the long edges of the foil up, folding them onto each other to create a seal. Then fold in the short edges of the foil to create the packet, making sure all edges are sealed, and leaving enough space in the foil packet for the onions to move when you shake it.
  5. Place the foil packet on the grill over direct heat (but not a direct flame). You can also place it over indirect heat to reduce any risk of burning the onions. Cook for 25-30 minutes, shaking the foil packet halfway through. You can also gently open and stir the onions around halfway through.
  6. Gently open the foil packet, allowing the steam to escape. Stir the onions before serving and allow to cool slightly.
