Easy Homemade Blackberry Sauce

Easy Homemade Blackberry Sauce combines fresh or frozen blackberries and sugar cooked until juicy, then thickened with a lemon and cornstarch slurry. The sauce yields a bright, tangy topping with a thickened, glossy texture ideal for desserts or breakfast items. Its simplicity and fresh fruit flavor make it versatile and practical.

Description

This sauce starts by heating blackberries and sugar together until the sugar dissolves and the berries release juice. A mixture of lemon juice and cornstarch is added to thicken the sauce as it reaches a boil. Cooking briefly after addition of the slurry ensures a smooth, thickened consistency.

The lemon juice enhances the blackberry flavor with acidity, balancing the sweetness and helping preserve color. The sauce finishes glossy and thick but pourable, suitable for spooning over pancakes, ice cream, or yogurt.

When using fresh berries, water is added to help extract juices and prevent burning. The sauce can be refrigerated in an airtight container and used within several days.
