Easy Homemade Breadstick Recipe

This Easy Homemade Breadstick Recipe yields soft, slightly chewy sticks with a golden crust and a subtle blend of Italian seasoning, garlic salt, and optional Parmesan cheese. The dough uses active dry yeast and a simple mix of flour, water, and butter, kneaded briefly and rested twice, resulting in well-risen breadsticks that bake to a tender interior. The twist or straight shapes allow for a pleasing texture contrast on the edges, making these breadsticks practical for dinners or snacking alongside soups and salads.

Description

Easy Homemade Breadstick Recipe combines basic bread ingredients with Italian seasoning and garlic salt to create flavorful sticks with a tender crumb and golden exterior. The process begins by proofing yeast in warm water with sugar to activate it, then mixing in flour and salt for the dough. After kneading and brief resting, the dough is rolled, cut into strips, twisted or left straight, and allowed a second rise that helps develop the texture. Baking until golden creates crusty edges around a soft center. Optional Parmesan adds a savory topping enhancement.

The breadsticks offer a mild garlic and herb flavor balanced by the butter's moisture. They can complement many meals or serve as a snack or appetizer. Keeping them spaced on the baking sheet and covering during rising ensures proper shape and lift. The recipe is ideal for those comfortable with basic yeast dough preparation and provides flexibility with shaping and seasoning.

To optimize results, the water temperature should be about 105°F to properly activate the yeast without killing it, and flour amounts may be adjusted depending on humidity and flour type to achieve the correct dough consistency. Using salted butter brings a slight saltiness, and substitutions with instant yeast are possible with minor adjustments in the yeast activation step.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ½ cups water about 105 F, warm
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour plus extra for sprinkling. Please see the note below about the flour.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese optional

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer (or in a large bowl), stir together the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes or until foamy.
  2. Mix in flour and salt. The dough should clear the sides of the mixing bowl and feel slightly sticky but shouldn't come off on your fingers if you pinch it.
  3. Knead dough for three minutes.
  4. Cover, and let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
  5. Grease an 11X17-inch baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
  6. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into about a 12x16-inch rectangle about 1/2-inch thick.
  7. Cut the dough in half width-wise with a pizza cutter. Cut into 8 strips lengthwise for a total of 16 strips.
  8. Twist each strip slightly (or leave them as strips), and place about 1/2-inch apart on the baking sheet.
  9. Cover with greased plastic wrap and let rise 30 minutes. Toward the end of the resting time, preheat oven to 375 F.
  10. Bake 12-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. While breadsticks are baking, stir together butter, seasoning, and garlic salt.
  12. Brush over hot breadsticks, and then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, if using.

Notes

  • Use water heated to about 105°F to activate yeast effectively without harming it.
  • You can substitute active dry yeast with instant yeast without proofing it first.
  • Flour amount may vary slightly due to measuring technique and humidity; adjust for a dough that is slightly sticky but manageable.
  • Salted butter is used here, but unsalted butter can be substituted if desired.
  • For lower sodium, consider replacing some garlic salt with garlic powder.
  • This recipe can be made by hand following similar mixing and kneading steps.
