Easy Homemade Calzone Recipe
Description
The Easy Homemade Calzone is crafted by rolling pizza dough into circles filled with seasoned sauce, vegetables, pepperoni, and cheese. Folding the dough over the filling and crimping the edges seals in the ingredients for baking. The top is vented to allow steam release, preventing sogginess. Brushing with olive oil before baking adds flavor and promotes browning. Baking at 425°F yields a golden, crisp calzone with a tender interior.
This calzone is served warm, often accompanied by extra warmed pizza sauce for dipping. It’s a handheld meal that highlights familiar pizza flavors in a folded, portable form.
Use either homemade or store-bought pizza dough. If using ingredients with excess moisture, cook or drain them properly to avoid soggy fillings. Adding ricotta cheese can provide richer texture. Let the calzones cool briefly after baking to set the filling and prevent cheese from leaking.
Ingredients
- 1 pound pizza dough
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- ½ cup onion diced
- ½ cup green bell pepper diced
- ½ cup pepperoni sliced
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F and line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
- Divide pizza dough into 4 equal parts and roll each dough ball into a 1/4 inch thick circle.
- On half of each dough circle, add equal parts sauce, yellow onion, green bell pepper, and sliced pepperoni. Make sure to leave a little room around the edges so you can crimp the calzone shut.
- Sprinkle the toppings with equal parts shredded cheese. Then fold the other half of the dough over the toppings and crimp the edges.
- Cut 2-3 air vents into the top of the calzone and place it on to the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush with olive oil and bake for about 15 minutes or until the dough is fully cooked and the calzone is golden brown.
- Serve with warmed pizza sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use homemade or store-bought pizza dough for convenience.
- Cook or drain watery vegetables and precook meats before filling.
- Ricotta cheese can be added for a traditional style.
- Allow calzones to cool for a few minutes after baking to avoid hot filling leakage.
