Easy Homemade Kettle Corn Recipe

This Easy Homemade Kettle Corn combines freshly popped popcorn kernels with sugar, salt, and optional cayenne pepper for a lightly sweet and lightly salted snack with a hint of spice. The popcorn is cooked on the stove in oil, then quickly tossed with sugar to coat while hot, resulting in a crunchy, sweet crust on the popped kernels.

Description

Making kettle corn at home involves heating popcorn kernels in neutral oil (such as vegetable, coconut, or grapeseed) in a heavy-bottomed pot. Once the kernels pop and slow, sugar, salt, and optional cayenne pepper are added immediately, then the popcorn is tossed by shaking the pot or stirring in a bowl to evenly coat the kernels with melted sugar. The heat is then turned off to prevent burning.

The finished kettle corn offers a balance of sweet and salty flavors with an optional mild heat from cayenne. The crunchy popcorn texture is enhanced by the caramelized sugar coating. This snack works well for movie nights, parties, or casual snacking.

Store kettle corn in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness and crunch. Prepare and toss quickly after popping to ensure sugar melts and coats well without burning.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 1/4 cup neutral cooking oil vegetable oil, coconut oil, or grape seed oil, generic cooking oil
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 dashes cayenne pepper optional

Instructions

  1. Place the oil and popcorn kernels in a large 6-8 quart heavy-bottomed pot with a lid. Shake the pot to cover the kernels in oil. Place the lid on the pot and open the vent. If your lid doesn't have a vent, offset the lid a little so there's a crack in the side.
  2. Place the pot over medium heat and wait for the kernels to start popping. Measure the sugar and salt so it's ready once the popcorn stops popping.
  3. The moment the kernels slow and are about to stop popping, open the pot and pour in the sugar, salt, and cayenne. Turn the heat off, hold the pot by the handles, and toss the popcorn in a circular motion. Do this quickly while the popcorn and pot are still hot so the sugar melts and coats the popcorn. If your pot isn't big enough to toss the popcorn, pour it out into a large bowl to toss, but work fast. Store in an air-tight container for up to a week.
