Easy Homemade Mocha
Description
Easy Homemade Mocha uses a mixture of granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and a bit of water heated until smooth. This chocolate base is combined with hot coffee and milk, heated until steaming. The drink can be whisked vigorously to develop a light foam when prepared on the stove. Alternatively, all ingredients (except water and topping) can be shaken vigorously in a mason jar, then microwaved for a frothy mocha.
The resulting mocha has a balance of sweetness and chocolate bitterness, enhanced by the creaminess of milk. Toppings such as whipped cream or a splash of heavy cream add richness as desired. This mocha is a cozy, homemade coffee drink suitable for any time of day.
The recipe offers two preparation methods for convenience and customization based on available equipment and taste preferences. Sugar amount can be adjusted to taste, and non-fat milk or other percentages can be used.
Ingredients
- 1 granulated sugar to taste, to 2 tablespoons (12g to 25g
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder 5g
- 1 tablespoon water omit if making using the mason jar method
- 1 cup coffee hot
- ¼ cup milk any percentage
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream optional
- Whipped Cream for topping, optional
Instructions
Stovetop or Microwave
- In a small pot or microwave-safe cup, stir together sugar, cocoa powder, and water. Heat on the stove (or in your microwave for about 15 seconds), and stir until sugar and cocoa powder dissolve and sauce is completely smooth.
- Stir in coffee and milk and continue to heat until steaming (about 30 seconds in the microwave). If making on the stove, you can whisk the mixture vigorously until foamy. Pour into a cup, top with whipped cream if desired, and enjoy!
Mason Jar Method
- Combine all ingredients except the water and optional whipped cream in a mason jar. Screw the lid on securely and wrap top with a towel (in case your jar leaks). Give a few very good shakes, until everything is well-mixed and mixture is foamy.
- Pour into a mug and microwave for 30 seconds or until steaming. Top with whipped cream if desired. Enjoy!
Notes
- Approximate nutrition was calculated with non-fat milk and excludes whipped cream topping.
- Adjust sugar quantity to your preference, up to 2 tablespoons.
- Choose stovetop, microwave, or mason jar shaking methods based on convenience.
