Easy Homemade Taco Seasoning
Description
This taco seasoning mix combines several ground spices including chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, crushed chili flakes, oregano, black pepper, and sea salt. The individual spices contribute a mix of smoky, savory, mild heat and herbal notes, forming a balanced seasoning for taco meat, vegetarian fillings, or sauces.
The ingredients are mixed thoroughly to create about three tablespoons, equivalent to a commercial packet. This homemade blend can be adjusted by increasing quantities for larger batches, altered to include onion powder if fresh onion is not being used, or modified spice levels. Adding cornstarch allows the seasoning to bind better in wet applications like sauces or meat mixtures.
Stored in an airtight container, this seasoning lasts up to a year before flavor diminishes. It can be ground finer if preferred, and optional salt reduction supports low-sodium diets. The seasoning is straightforward to prepare and convenient to have on hand for a variety of Mexican and Tex-Mex recipes.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon chili powder or sweet paprika for a mild flavor
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 1/2 teaspoon salt sea salt
Instructions
- Mix chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, chili flakes, oregano, black pepper and salt in a mixing bowl or a mason jar and stir to combine.
- Enjoy with tacos, fajitas, Mexican salads, sauces dips, soups or casseroles!
Notes
- This recipe yields about 3 tablespoons, equivalent to one commercial taco seasoning packet.
- Store the seasoning in an airtight container for up to a year; flavor may weaken after that.
- Add onion powder if not using fresh onions in your dishes for fuller flavor.
- Adjust chili powder and chili flakes to vary the heat level to your preference.
- For a saucier consistency in cooked dishes, add ½ teaspoon cornstarch and mix the seasoning with water before adding to food.
- If outside the US, reduce chili powder to 1 teaspoon to accommodate different spice strengths.
