Easy Hush Puppies Recipe

Easy Hush Puppies combine cornmeal and flour with sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, mixed with egg and buttermilk to create a slightly sweet, moist batter. Deep-fried into golden balls, they have a crisp exterior with a soft, tender inside. These savory cornmeal fritters pair well with honey butter and are often served as a side dish.

Description

The recipe starts by heating neutral cooking oil to 350°F for frying. Dry ingredients including cornmeal, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt are combined, then beaten egg and most of the buttermilk are added to form a moist, scoopable dough. Additional buttermilk is added as needed to adjust consistency to moist but not runny.

The batter is dropped by teaspoon-sized portions into hot oil and fried for 3-5 minutes, turning once, until golden brown. The hush puppies are drained on paper towels. They are typically served warm accompanied by honey butter to complement their mild sweetness and cornmeal flavor.

The texture balances a crispy outside crust with a tender, soft interior from the buttermilk and cornmeal combination.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk you may not use all of it
  • neutral cooking oil for frying, generic cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oil to 350°F.
  2. Combine dry ingredients.
  3. Beat egg. Add to dry mixture with most of the buttermilk adding more as needed to create a dough that is moist but not runny.
  4. Drop mixture by teaspoon in hot oil. Cook 3-5 minutes until golden, turning once during cook time.
  5. Place on paper towel to cool. Serve with honey butter.

Notes

  • If buttermilk is unavailable, make a substitute by acidifying milk with lemon juice or vinegar before using.
  • Optionally, add a tablespoon of minced onion to the batter for added flavor.
  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F to ensure even frying and prevent overly greasy hush puppies.
