Easy Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats

Easy Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats cook steel cut oats with milk, water, cinnamon, salt, and sweetener under pressure for creamy, tender oatmeal. The method requires no stirring and allows for two texture options: slightly chewy or softer creamier oats depending on cooking time. This hands-off recipe suits a comforting breakfast with customizable toppings like fresh fruit, nuts, or nut butter.

Description

This recipe prepares steel cut oats in an Instant Pot by combining oats, a mixture of milk (or plant-based alternatives), water, cinnamon, salt, and maple syrup or honey for sweetness. The mixture is cooked under high pressure for 5 to 8 minutes, producing oatmeal with either a slightly chewy or softer texture. The slow natural pressure release, which takes about 25 minutes, is essential to finish the cooking and achieve the right consistency without burning.

The result is a creamy porridge that can be tailored with toppings such as fresh berries, dried fruits, nuts, and nut butters, adding texture and flavor. Toasting the oats briefly in butter or oil before pressure cooking enhances their nutty aroma.

This set-it-and-forget-it method is convenient, though the total cooking time including pressurizing and releasing pressure is around 30 to 40 minutes. Avoid using the 'keep warm' function for too long as it may overcook the oats and alter texture. Soupy oats will thicken upon cooling; adjust consistency by stirring in additional liquid if needed.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ½ cup steel cut oats
  • 2 ½ cup milk or almond milk, full fat coconut milk, or other milk of your choice
  • 2 ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon maple syrup or honey

For Topping:

  • Fresh fruits
  • dried fruit
  • fresh berries
  • nuts
  • nut butter

Instructions

  1. Pour milk, water into the instant pot. Add steel cut oats along with pinch of salt and cinnamon powder and maple syrup (or honey) into the pot.
  2. Using a spatula mix everything until well combined.
  3. Secure the lid of instant pot. Ensure the pressure knob is in SEALING POSITION.
  4. Select HIGH PRESSURE option and adjust timer to 5 minutes for creamy slightly chewy oats or set timer to 8 minutes for soft creamier oats.Note: consider extra time instant pot takes to come to pressure. Instant pot takes around 12 minutes to come to pressure and the timer starts. Also note you need the pot to release all it’s pressure naturally without forcing it, that is another 20-25 minutes. But even with all these extra time (which is not exactly 5 minutes), it’s still worth it as its effortless and cook perfectly. You don’t have to baby sit near the stove.
  5. Once cooking time is complete, allow pot to release all it’s pressure naturally. May take approximately 25 minutes. Once all the pressure settles, open the lid.
  6. Stir well.Jo’s Tip: don’t worry if oatmeal is soupy, it will turn creamier and thicker as it cools. And don’t worry if oatmeal is too thick, you can adjust the consistency by adding extra water or milk to loosen it out.
  7. Scoop it out into serving bowls, add your favorite toppings. ENJOY!

Notes

  • Allow the Instant Pot to release pressure naturally to complete cooking and avoid underdone or burnt oats.
  • Total time includes pressure build-up and release; plan for about 30 to 40 minutes overall.
  • Do not use the 'keep warm' setting for extended periods to prevent overcooking and mushy texture.
  • If oats are too thick after cooking, thin with extra water or milk before serving.
  • To deepen flavor, toast oats briefly in butter or coconut oil before pressure cooking.
  • Texture can be controlled by adjusting pressure cooking time: 5 minutes for chewy, 8 minutes for softer oats.
  • Nutritional values vary depending on ingredients used; consider this when planning meals.
