Easy Matcha Tea

Easy Matcha Tea is a finely sifted green tea powder whisked with hot water to create a frothy, vibrant drink. The traditional "W" whisking technique produces a smooth texture with a mild earthy bitterness. Optional sweeteners like honey or maple syrup can soften the flavor. It can be served hot or chilled over ice, offering a versatile beverage with a bright green color and gentle vegetal notes.

Description

Easy Matcha Tea involves sifting matcha powder to ensure no clumps, then whisking vigorously with a small amount of hot water to create a frothy suspension. Additional hot water dilutes the concentrate to drinking strength. The whisking method, traditionally done with a bamboo whisk in a rapid "W" pattern, helps to blend and aerate the powder, resulting in a smooth, creamy texture without lumps.

The tea has a gentle earthy taste with a slight natural bitterness characteristic of matcha. Sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or other options can be added to mellow the flavor. The drink appears bright green due to the powdered green tea leaves.

This tea can be enjoyed hot straight from the whisked preparation or cooled in the refrigerator and poured over ice for a refreshing version. The method accommodates adjustments in sweetness and intensity, making it suitable for different preferences.

In warmer months, chilling the prepared tea and serving over ice offers a refreshing alternative. Using a fine mesh sifter before whisking improves the smoothness of the final beverage. A dedicated matcha bowl or mug helps with the whisking process and presentation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ teaspoon matcha powder
  • ¼ cup water hot
  • 1 cup water hot, additional
  • honey or maple syrup, or other sweetener, optional, to taste

Instructions

  1. Sift. Sift the matcha (to remove any lumps) into a mug or small bowl.
  2. Whisk. Pour the ¼ cup of hot water into the mug and use a matcha whisk to whisk vigorously in a "W" pattern for about 30 seconds, until frothy. Alternatively, you can use an electric frother.
  3. Fill up the mug. Add the remaining hot water and enjoy. Sweeten to taste, if desired.

Notes

  • For a smooth texture, sift matcha powder to remove lumps before whisking.
  • Whisk vigorously in a "W" pattern to achieve froth and even dissolution.
  • Sweeten with honey, maple syrup, or other sweeteners to adjust bitterness.
  • For a cold version, chill the prepared tea and serve over ice.
  • Using a matcha bowl or small mug facilitates proper whisking and serving.
